The Logistics of Flowers
The logistics of moving flowers for a big holiday like Mother's Day is most likely something you do not admire. Typically, you go to a floral shop, pick them and leave. But when you start to dig into what goes into those flowers, being on the shelf, it is incredible.
It is like shipping a vaccine
The United States floral industry is about $8.5 Billion. Most of the flowers we purchase in the US are grown in Central America and flown into Miami. While on the flight they are specially packaged. Once in Miami, they are offloaded and either stored in coolers or a shaded area immediately. Finally, when the freight is ready, they are loaded on refrigerated trucks. One company that handles a good number of floral deliveries coming out of Miami may have a 15-stop run on one truck itself. From the time that they are picked at a farm and available for purchase are your local floral shop is typically five days.
From a logistics point of view, the operation is amazing for a product that has an incredibly short window of opportunity. Typically, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the two biggest days in terms of sales. The floral industry must forecast demand as precisely as possible because giving your loved one flowers on February 15th could lead to some issues.
