As the dealine looms, debate over the ELD mandate is heating up. Trucks.com reports that a number of small trucking firms are taking to social media to express concerns over the cost of converting to the Electronic Logging Devices. Twitter is the best way to reach Trump, said Les Willis, who owns two trucking companies in Texas and Arkansas. "I figure since the president uses Twitter to relay his message to the public, we should use Twitter in the same manner," he said. "Why shouldn't he listen to us, since we hear him loud and clear?" While groups like #ELDorMe are making a final push towards the delay of ELDs, it appears that Washington may not be listening. Raymond Martinez, Trump's nominee for administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said in recent Senate testimony that he would not delay implementation of the ELD regulation. ELDs have opened the market for consolidation as large trucking firms look to purchase smaller operations that are concerned about operating under the new regulations. Reuters reports that XPO Logistics has up to $8 billion available for possible merger deals. With Toys 'R Us filing for bankruptcy and traditional action figures and board games losing ever increasing market share to video games, Hasbro and Mattel, the US two largest toy makers may be merging. Last minute shoppers may be out of luck this holiday season as department stores like Macy's shorten stock and are keeping less inventory on hand, according to Reuters. Retailers are trying a new strategy aimed at avoiding the practice of heavily discounting overstocked product in the new year. " Between the risk of a lost sale and the risk of a loss of margin, department stores are willing to lose the sale this year," said Greg Portell, a consultant with AT Kearney who advises retail chains on strategy.
