What are we hearing about reshoring?
There has been a lot of buzz about reshoring in the news and on blogs lately. It will be interesting to see how much of a trend this becomes over the next 18 months. At the end of the day, for many companies, it comes down to the availability, quality, and financials. China is clearly the leader in manufacturing capacity and there is a reason why these products are made in China. It will more than likely take a while to transfer all that manufacturing capacity back to the United States.
One strategy that the group recommended is diversifying where you source from and having plans for redundancies in case of emergencies.
What do we think will change post-COVID?
One potential change is the digitization of ocean BOLs; however, the industry tried to do this 25 years ago and there was massive pushback. The ocean industry has had a lot of problems working through standardization – this has been well documented over the years (especially recently around the blockchain conversation).
Another area that potentially could change is business travel. We are hearing a lot of companies talk about reducing business travel and downsizing their office space. These changes could be tough as people like to meet face to face to build relationships.
Any changes at the border?
We have not had any major disruptions at the border. This is something to monitor as the produce season heats up and industry starts to open again.
