“I’m Already Working With Someone”
My name is Matt Slane the Director of Business Development at Aborn & Co. Often, when speaking with prospects we hear the familiar phrase –
"We are working with someone already." I wanted to share some thoughts on our blog about what it means to be working with somebody already.
In the world of freight transportation, we often see companies that believe working with a freight broker is as good as working with a freight consultant. That being said, certain aspects of the broker-shipper relationship are in conflict with shipper's best interests. The main flaw in the broker-shipper relationship is simple: the broker sees your freight cost as revenue while you see it as an expense. A good broker can be a good partner--when you tell him the negotiated price, not when he tells you the negotiated price.
Let me explain
The requirement to get your freight to your customer on time and intact is paramount. It's easy to find a carrier or broker but much more difficult to find one willing to move the goods at the right price. A good consultant is looking at the invoice and seeing how the price stacks up against the market. They do this by benchmarking these costs and services. Unlike brokers, who are limited by how large their carrier network is, a consultant is open to all the qualified carriers that are available in the market. Instead of only having rates from a handful of carriers, a consultant can often see rates across the entire spectrum of the industry. A good consultant will know if you're receiving fair market rates, on the best lanes possible, and in the time essential to keep your supply chain moving. With a consultant, you aren't working with someone who is concerned with the margins on each freight invoice and how many shipments they can move. You're hiring a partner and team member to work for you to make sure that you are getting the service you need at a great price, not a price that's "good enough."
When was the last time you analyzed your supply chain with a truly independent freight expert who is in the market and not paid by the carriers?
Aborn is different than a freight broker. The fundamental difference between Aborn & Co and a broker is that we see what your spend on freight as cost, not revenue. We have one employer: your company. We get paid by one company: your company. This frees us to find the right service at the best cost for you. We are driven to get your freight to the right place at the right time at the best price available. Once we start to work for a client we no longer worry about our money, and we start worrying about your money.
In a rapidly evolving freight market, the contracts you signed and broker relationships you made even last year may no longer provide the best value or solution available. Are you ready to have someone work for you who provides a service instead of a transaction? Need a partner who sees freight as cost instead of revenue?
